Moanalua dominates Kalaheo

By

POSTED: Sunday, January 03, 2010

A lot can happen in one year. Or two.

Moanalua's maturity has carried over to defense. Fifth-ranked Na Menehune shackled Kalaheo sharpshooter Aaron Fernandez en route to a 59-47 win last night in the regular-season opener for both teams.

Moanalua (8-4 overall) lost both matchups with Kalaheo a year ago and hadn't beaten the Mustangs since the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red semifinals on Feb. 13, 2008.

“;They're just a better team than we are at this point,”; Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. “;They're more seasoned. You can't fall behind like that and shoot 3-for-14 from the line (first half).”;

Moanalua did it with defense and a nice offensive flow. Marcus Monroe, normally the leading scorer, had nine points and four assists, setting the tone for a balanced attack against Kalaheo's man-to-man defense.

“;He garners so much attention, especially on the post, so he sensed when to go one-on-one and when to find guys open,”; Moanalua coach Greg Tacon said.

Reserve forward Kevin Amaral scored nine of his 13 points in the first half to lead Moanalua. Wesley Armbrust came off the bench to score 11 points. Armbrust and Monroe took turns covering Fernandez, who finished with 14 points.

Kona Makaula also scored 14 for No. 4 Kalaheo (8-4 overall), but free-throw shooting was a sore spot. The Mustangs were 14-for-33 at the line, including 4-for-10 by Makaula and 4-for-11 by Fernandez.

“;They switch on everything,”; Furtado said. “;Aaron did a better job finding open players in the second half.”;

Moanalua jumped to a 5-0 lead and never trailed. Fernandez had just one point in the opening quarter and didn't score a bucket until he drove the baseline for two points with 2:59 left in the first half.

That cut the lead to 24-7. Moanalua had eight assists and just three turnovers by intermission.

Kalaheo was 3-for-16 from the field with one assist and nine turnovers by halftime.

Moanalua extended the lead to 46-20 on a layup by Reece Racoma late in the third quarter.

Kalaheo scored the first 12 points of the fourth quarter, cutting the lead to 48-34, but Monroe swished his second 3-pointer and the visitors never cut the deficit to single digits.

It wasn't a perfect night for Moanalua, at least to its coach. Tacon scolded his starters during the break before the second quarter, even with a 14-4 lead.

“;We have some flaws we have to work out. We missed switches, not coming off our man when Fernandez came to the basket,”; he said. “;We're not a good team, but we have the potential.”;

The teams were even on the boards through three quarters with 20 each. Moanalua emptied the bench in the fourth and lost the battle on the glass 31-24.

Moanalua shot 45 percent from the field (22-for-48) and 52 percent at the line (12-for-23). Kalaheo was 42 percent from the field (16-for-38) and 42 percent from the line (14-for-33).

Moanalua finished with eight turnovers to Kalaheo's 16.
