Police Court to Start Earlier to Finish Classes

Because of the large number of cases which the police court is called upon to handle every morning, Judge Harry Irwin is now opening court at 8:30 instead of 9 o'clock.

He announced this morning that the new schedule would be maintained until further notice.

The cases are also taking much longer to settle than formerly, because of the stiffer sentences which Judge Irwin is imposing resulting in the defendants putting up more of a fight.

Gambling is an instance. Formerly the fine was $5 when the accused pleaded guilty, now it is $10, and at times even more. The fine for auto speeding has also been increased.

The case of the 38 Filipinoes arrested last week on a charge of vagrancy at Iwilei, came practically to an end this morning when 20 pleaded guilty and were given the choice of going back to the Philippine Islands or going to jail for six months. They chose the former. The others were either discharged or given jail sentences. Santiage was sent up for nine months and a few others got six months. Yesterday one Filipino caught bootlegging was fined $250.

Chief of Detectives McDuffie is very busy these days in the campaign which he has inaugurated to clean up the gambling and bootlegging in the city, and he is obtaining exceptionally good results, as is shown by the number of cases of convictions which he gets in court.
