The arrival of Ethyn Adrian Torres disrupted the plans of Claudia and Salvador Torres, who thought they would be watching fireworks at midnight.

Instead, they had Hawaii's first baby in 2010.

“;I wanted my baby out of me, so it was perfect,”; said Claudia Torres, 18. “;I loved it.”;

Ethyn was born at 12:07 a.m. on the sixth floor of Tripler Army Medical Center, weighing 8 pounds, 4 ounces and measuring 20 inches.

Salvador Torres, 20, a Marine lance corporal, and his wife are from Chicago, but moved to Hawaii less than a month ago. They live on Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe.

Doctors had told the first-time parents to expect their baby on Dec. 30, but when he didn't come, they told them it would be a while before he arrived.

So the couple planned to celebrate New Year's Eve with a barbecue in Honolulu and by catching a fireworks show.

“;We didn't think anything of it until I woke up in the middle of the night (early Thursday morning) and had to go into the hospital,”; Claudia said.

Claudia's water broke about 4 a.m. and she started having regular contractions about 7:30 a.m.

She expected the baby to come before the new year, but she was still in the throes of labor as hospital staff counted down to midnight.

Salvador found the arrival of his first baby “;pretty intense.”;

“;When I saw the baby's head come out, that was the scariest moment,”; he said. “;It just popped out and then the rest of the body came out.”;

The couple didn't realize they had the state's first baby of the decade until after Tripler staff started calling around to other hospitals about 1 a.m.

“;We wouldn't have expected it,”; Claudia said. “;It was just a surprise. It's amazing.”;

Salvador added, “;We're still in shock.”;

Claudia said she's been in touch with her mother in Chicago. The couple, who are alone in Hawaii, plans to introduce Ethyn to the rest of the family back home in March.
