Man, 25, charged in Kailua robbery

A 25-year-old man has been charged with robbing a 49-year-old woman Wednesday night in Kailua.

Dayton Chang, who does not have a local address, was booked at about 11:45 a.m. yesterday on suspicion of second-degree robbery, violating a temporary restraining order and criminal property damage. He was also wanted on an outstanding warrant.

He was charged last night with second-degree robbery and held in lieu of $19,700 bail.

Police said Chang went to the woman's home at about 10 p.m. Wednesday and asked her for money. When she refused, Chang tried to grab her purse, but she threw it at him, then ran away, police said. Police did not say how they knew each other.

Officers found Chang on Kupau Street in Keolu Hills.

Kauai drowning victims identified

Two men who drowned Monday in separate incidents on Kauai have been identified.

Corey Dunn, 20, of North Carolina was snorkeling at Waiohai Bay in Poipu before he was found face down at about 1 p.m. in waters about 20 feet from shore. He died at Wilcox Memorial Hospital, Mary Daubert, Kauai County spokeswoman, said by e-mail.

Jason Fleiss, 41, of Portland, Ore., was swept out to sea by a strong current while swimming with his 32-year-old brother at Kauapea Beach at about 1:30 p.m.

A surfer rescued the brother, who then swam back with a rescue tube and found Fleiss floating face down in the water. Fleiss died at Wilcox Hospital.

Blazes believed caused by fireworks

Firefighters responded yesterday to 11 fires believed to be started by fireworks.

By 8:45 p.m., firefighters responded to five wildfires, two at night near Waipahu Middle School and Waialua Beach Road. Three were reported during the day in Pacific Heights, Punchbowl, and Kaneohe, said fire Capt. Terry Seelig in an e-mail.

Firefighters also responded to rubbish fires in Makiki, McCully, and Aiea and a vehicle fire in Waipahu. Details on two other fireworks-related fires were not available.

No one was injured and no property was damaged, Seelig said.
