A 28-year-old Hilo man who allegedly shot his ex-girlfriend before killing himself on the Big Island Wednesday had been ordered by a Family Court judge to stay away from the woman less than two weeks earlier.

Harry W.K. Batalona Jr. died of a single gunshot wound to the head after the shooting at about 7 p.m. in his driveway at 29 Manaolana Place, police said.

Jolene Medeiros, his ex-girlfriend, suffered several gunshot wounds to her head and right forearm, said Big Island police Capt. Randall Medeiros. He said she remained in critical condition yesterday at Hilo Medical Center.

Police have classified the incident as an attempted murder and suicide.

Medeiros, 24, of Hilo, had filed for a temporary restraining order against Batalona on Dec. 21. Batalona, who had two children with Medeiros, was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday in connection with the restraining order.

Capt. Medeiros said Batalona shot Jolene Medeiros with a small-caliber, semiautomatic rifle as she sat alone in her car in the driveway, then shot himself.

“;We're still trying to determine what circumstances led up to this event,”; he said.

Officers recovered the gun and were investigating whether it was a registered firearm. Some members of Batalona's family were in the house, but no one saw the shooting, Capt. Medeiros said.

He added that Batalona is known to police, but would not elaborate.

According to the state's Criminal Justice Data Center, Batalona was sentenced to one year of probation for a third-degree assault conviction on Nov. 30. He was also convicted in a prostitution case in August and misdemeanor assault in 2003.

Ron Sakoda, a manager at KTA Super Stores in Hilo, said Jolene Medeiros has worked as a cashier at the supermarket for several years and is a “;good employee.”;

According to documents filed in Family Court, Medeiros said she had an eight-year relationship with Batalona and that they have a 7-year-old daughter and a 6-year-old son together.

Medeiros recounted in the documents how Batalona believed she was cheating on him and hit her in the face, then prevented her from leaving earlier this month.

On Dec. 18, Batalona went to her workplace and yelled at her, asking where she had been, then grabbed her arm and pulled her outside, the documents said.

The restraining order required Batalona to stay away from Medeiros and his children.

In the documents, Medeiros wrote that she did not believe Batalona had any firearms, but that he had threatened to use a gun against family members. She added that he had an “;emotional disability”; and may have been depressed.
