Mustangs missed out

With Kalaheo's boys basketball team playing well — a 62-58 win over rival Kahuku on Monday in the St. Francis Merv Lopes Classic is ample proof — it's hard to say any help is needed.

The Mustangs have a deadly shooter in Aaron Fernandez, who scored 36 points in a win over Roosevelt on Saturday. But the Mustangs could've corralled another offensive force over the summer.

Micah Dunhour, a 6-foot-4 guard, developed well in the offseason while playing for Hawaii Select, a team composed partly of Kalaheo players. He decided to leave his previous school, Honokaa, to play on Oahu, but instead of Kalaheo, Dunhour opted for tiny Academy of the Pacific, a Division II program.

Lights-out shooting

It's still December and scorers are lighting it up.

On the girls' side, Roosevelt's Mikela Thoemmes had a 35-point effort against Moanalua last week. Kaiser's Mele Adams had 30 against Kahuku.

In boys' hoops, Aaron Fernandez of Kalaheo has already posted games of 41 and 36 points.

What's going on?

“;That's kind of unusual,”; Pearl City girls coach Mike Morton said. “;Maybe (Adams) can keep it up in Division II, but I don't know if (Thoemmes) can keep it going in D-I.”;

One factor is that a lot of girls teams lack size in the paint, more this year than usual. Morton theorizes that overall play is down a bit, so skilled scorers are taking advantage.

“;Some guys are taking it to the next level,”; he said.
