Infant discovered unconscious dies

A 7-week-old female infant died after being discovered unconscious in a mobile swing Tuesday.

The baby girl was fed and put to sleep at about 3 a.m. in the swing. Her father awoke at 8:10 a.m. and discovered her unconscious, police said.

Emergency Medical Services personnel took the girl to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Police said there were no signs of foul play.

Lifeguards busy on North Shore

Lifeguards on the North Shore performed three rescues and two assists and issued 400 verbal warnings yesterday due to the high surf, according to the Ocean Safety Division.

Lifeguards are prepared for a much larger northwest swell beginning late this afternoon. Surf is expected to reach warning levels on north- and west-facing shores of Niihau and Kauai, then move down the island chain.

“;Ocean Safety personnel are asking the public to take the necessary precautions to protect life and property,”; said Bryan Cheplic, Emergency Services Department spokesman.

Beachgoers are reminded to swim at a beach with a lifeguard, consult with the lifeguard before entering the water, heed warning signs and never swim alone.

Fake check scam brings warning

A Hawaii health maintenance organization is warning of a scam involving fake checks of as much as $3,900.

AlohaCare spokesman George Irion said yesterday the nonprofit with 70,000 members first learned of the scam when a North Carolina resident inquired about a check bearing AlohaCare's name. He says this week a Hawaii resident received a similar fake check and letter, and Honolulu police were alerted.

Irion says he suspects that when recipients call the mainland number, they are asked to provide their own money to complete the scam.

Northwest visitor dies snorkeling

A 72-year-old Washington state man died while snorkeling in waters off Kealakekua Bay in South Kona, Big Island police reported.

Police identified the man as Clarence Bolt of Prosser, Wash.

Police were called yesterday afternoon to Kona Community Hospital, where they learned Prosser had been found unconscious in the water. He had been pronounced dead at 11:45 a.m.

Police do not suspect foul play and an autopsy is scheduled to determine the cause of death.

Woman arrested in purse-grabbing

Police arrested a 33-year-old Ewa Beach woman after she allegedly stole another woman's purse in Waikiki.

About 1:05 p.m. on Nov. 29, police said, the suspect grabbed the 27-year-old woman's purse from her shoulder and ran to a waiting vehicle.

Police arrested the 33-year-old woman at her home Tuesday on suspicion of second-degree theft.
