Eight months after honoring 23 soldiers and Marines who died in Iraq or Afghanistan, Gov. Linda Lingle made a special presentation of the Hawaii Medal of Honor to the 6-year-old son of one recipient.

Lingle, state Adjutant General Robert Lee and members of the Legislature presented the medal to Jase Brostrom, son of Army 1st Lt. Jonathan P. Brostrom, an Aiea native and Damien Memorial School graduate who was one of nine soldiers killed last year in an attack in Afghanistan.

The Hawaii Medal of Honor was created by the Legislature in 2005 and is presented annually to family members of servicemen and women with Hawaii ties who are killed in the line of duty.

Relatives accepted Brostrom's medal at the ceremony in April but asked the Governor's Office whether she could present it to Jase while he is visiting family in Hawaii this month.

“;The family believed that his young son now is of an age—there's been enough time elapsed—where this would be very meaningful to him,”; Lingle said.

“;Hopefully even at his young age, this will be something he can carry with him in life—not that it in any way even begins to make up for his loss, but to know that his father was a great person and that the people in our state recognize that and will remember him.”;

Jase thanked the governor and gave her a keepsake.

“;He gave me a bracelet with his father's name on it so that I could remember his father's name as well,”; Lingle said. “;Jase wears a similar bracelet on his wrist.”;
