The bullet is still lodged in Adrian Faitalia's left arm, and he has seven stitches near his mouth for a cut caused by flying glass.

His mother, Soi Faitalia, said doctors did not want to risk causing more damage by taking the bullet out.

The family had just left the eighth-grader's volleyball scrimmage at about 9:30 p.m. and was looking for a place to eat when the shooting happened.

Soi Faitalia said the family was going makai through the green light on Liliha Street at Vineyard Boulevard when a small car cut off the family's Ford Expedition.

She heard a bang, and her two daughters started screaming Adrian's name. The rear left window near Adrian was shattered, and the suspect fled, she said.

“;His head was down and his eyes were open,”; she said. “;It was really scary.”;

“;This is really sad,”; she said. She added that her son will be able play volleyball after he is healed.

Police were searching for a suspect. The suspect's vehicle was described as a white compact, said Maj. Clayton Kau, of the Honolulu Police Department.
