Big Isle fire monitored after 95% containment

Big Island firefighters continued monitoring hot spots last night after containing 95 percent of a 1,400-acre brush fire mauka of Kealakekua.

The fire did not threaten any structures yesterday, but sent bothersome smoke across a large part of the Kona side of the island.

Starting at about 1:50 p.m. Thursday, the blaze burned an area seven miles mauka of Highway 11 and above Konawaena High School, firefighters said. No one was injured.

Quince Mento, head of Big Island Civil Defense, said the fire was on Hokukano Ranch land at the 4,500-foot elevation between Hualalai and Mauna Loa volcanoes.

He said firefighters received complaints about smoke from North Kona to Ocean View in Kau.

The cause of the fire was unknown.
