Ramirez powers Roosevelt
POSTED: Friday, December 18, 2009
Nicole Ramirez scored 23 points and Roosevelt outlasted McKinley 59-42 last night by closing with a 16-2 run in the final 4 minutes at the Rough Riders' gym.
Roosevelt improved to 2-0 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red girls basketball play. McKinley (0-2) kept it close despite losing center Mele Kuna to fouls—she picked up her fourth and fifth personals in the final seconds of the third quarter.
After Ramirez scored on a backdoor cut for a layup, Roosevelt had a 41-31 lead with 7:08 left. McKinley went with a small, speedy lineup and cut into the lead. Jackie Tihano drilled a pair of 3-pointers, and Kylie Sato sank two foul shots to bring the Tigers within 43-40 with 4:16 remaining.
Roosevelt clamped down defensively at that point as the Tigers tired. Mikela Thoemmes split a double team on the post for a traditional three-point play for a 46-40 lead with 3:56 to go. Roosevelt scored 14 unanswered points, including a steal and breakaway layup by Shana Kawakami, and won going away.
Thoemmes added 15 points for Roosevelt (6-2 overall).
“;We're just working on fine-tuning things. We got a lot of energy off the bench,”; Roosevelt coach Hinano Higa said.
Sato led McKinley with 13 points. Tihano finished with nine and Jourdan Mills had eight.
“;Kylie's a great player who finds a way to score,”; Higa said. “;For us, it's all about executing. We need poise and patience.”;
Ramirez sank two 3-pointers as Roosevelt showed good ball movement most of the way, using Thoemmes on the post effectively.
“;We could've (done) better,”; Ramirez said. “;We just need to be more patient.”;
McKinley has struggled most of the early season, but has two steady scorers in Tihano and Sato.
“;We have a little secret weapon. We can go smaller and faster, but we like to have a center rebounding,”; coach Abel Warner said, referring to the loss of Kuna. “;We've got to communicate a little more on defense and get better position. The effort's improving, so I can't complain.”;
Both teams have a break until their next games on Wednesday. Roosevelt will visit Moanalua.
