Total of 80 years for rape attempt

HILO » A 52-year-old Big Island man convicted of trying to rape a 12-year-old girl has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for each of four counts of first-degree attempted sexual assault.

The terms for Peter Kalani Bailey are to run concurrently.

But Circuit Judge Glenn Hara also ordered Bailey to serve the sentence after completing a life sentence for the 1979 shooting death of 17-year-old Carol Olandy. She was found dead in a Leeward Oahu pineapple field.

Bailey was paroled for the murder in January 2003. His parole was revoked when he was charged in the case involving the 12-year-old girl.

Bailey attacked the girl in the office of the Hamakua Coast Assembly of God Church in 2007. He was the church's choir director, and she was a member of the choir.

Motorcycle accident kills Kaneohe Marine

A 24-year-old man from Marine Corps Base Hawaii at Kaneohe died yesterday after crashing his motorcycle into a telephone pole and a concrete wall.

The Marine was traveling north on Oneawa Street near the intersection of Manono Street in Kailua at 12:05 a.m. yesterday, police reported.

Police said the man, who had been riding a 2008 Suzuki GSX-R1000 motorcycle, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Speed may have been a factor, police said. The man was wearing a helmet.

3 boys arrested in theft of laptop from school

Police arrested three boys Friday for allegedly breaking into several classrooms and stealing a laptop computer from a Waianae school.

At 7:53 p.m. Oct. 25, police responded to an alarm and caught three boys, two 16-year-olds and one 17-year-old, fleeing on foot. One was carrying a laptop computer. A witness identified all three boys, police said.

Checks at the school found several classrooms were burglarized, and a laptop was reported missing.

Forensic evidence led to the identification of the three boys, and police arrested them Friday on suspicion of second-degree burglary. They were released pending investigation.

2 male suspects wanted for 7-Eleven robbery

Police are asking for the public's help in finding two men in their 20s who robbed a 7-Eleven on Thanksgiving Day.

At about 11:50 p.m. Nov. 26, the two men entered the store at 1136 N. King St. in Kalihi, and one man went behind the counter, brandished a handgun and took several packs of cigarettes, police said. The second man took several cases of beer.

The first is 5 feet 8 inches tall, 160 pounds, and has long black hair. He was wearing a black T-shirt with a “;Bob Marley”; design and black shorts.

The other man is 5 feet 6 inches tall, 160 pounds, and has short black hair. He was wearing a white T-shirt and blue denim shorts.
