ILH might trim football slate

The regular-season football schedule of the Interscholastic League of Honolulu might be cut by as many as three games for some teams next season.

With the HHSAA state championships set to finish on Thanksgiving weekend — to avoid continuing overlap with the start of winter sports — the ILH will lose a week of play. That means the current format has to be redone.

In recent years, teams have played a double round-robin within their classification and just once against teams in the other division. For Kamehameha, that meant playing Punahou and Saint Louis twice while playing Division II teams Damien, 'Iolani, Pac-Five and Word of Life once each.

A new format might mean a single round-robin and no more rematch games within the division. For D-I teams, it would be a drop from eight games to six. For D-II programs, it would shrink from nine games to six.

'Iolani coach Wendell Look said the decision won't be made until January.

“;We need to meet about that. We're stuck about it. It's predicated on the (HHSAA) changing the date of the state tournament,”; he said.

The need to complete the state football tournament earlier would also alleviate the overlap of winter and spring seasons.
