Big sister saw little sister get pushed around, and big sister wasn't having any of it.

Brigham Young obliterated the Hawaii women's basketball team 81-44 yesterday at the Hukilau Invitational in Laie—a day after the Rainbow Wahine routed host Brigham Young-Hawaii by 30.

The Cougars (5-2) seized the tournament title and emphatically snapped UH's two-game winning streak by hounding the turnover-prone Wahine (3-5) the whole game with fullcourt pressure. BYU used the press to stagger the Wahine with a stunning 31-2 run over the first 10 minutes, and things never really got better, as the Cougars created multiple mismatch problems in the halfcourt. Fifty percent accuracy from the field and a 44-24 domination of the backboards were more than enough to put away UH before 65 people at the Cannon Activities Center.

Hawaii played its third game in three days and was shooting for its first tournament title since 2002, when the Wahine won two nonconference tourneys under Vince Goo. Instead, UH turned the ball over 14 times in the first half and was held to season lows in field-goal percentage (.296) and points.

“;We'll go back to the drawing board, on all aspects of the game,”; coach Dana Takahara-Dias said. “;I really do believe the pressure got to us early, and it did not allow us to get into our offense ... a situation we felt comfortable with. It made us take shots we normally wouldn't.”;

At that point, the coach tried mixing up the lineup—but when the Wahine went big, the Cougars shredded them with outside shooting (12 3-pointers). When UH put shooters on the floor, BYU pounded the ball inside effectively.

Forward Julita Bungaite was the only Wahine player in double figures with 10 points and five rebounds.

For a while, the Wahine effort seemed destined for all the wrong records in the book; the Cougars limited the Wahine to just a single field goal over the first 10 minutes for a stunning 29-point lead. The scoreboard read 48-16 at halftime.

“;I have no idea (what happened),”; said Bungaite, who shot 5-for-10 in her third game for UH. “;That's not how we play. We (were) off today, missing easy shots.”;

UH wasted no time in jumping out to a double-digit lead on Division II BYUH on Friday. The Cougars watched that mismatch from the stands. BYU returned the favor on UH—and then some. It was a 67-point swing in victory margin for the “;visitors”; from Manoa.

Point guard Jazmine Foreman scored a game-high 21 points on 7-for-9 shooting for BYU.

“;I think our pressure helped, and our pressure up-tempos the game and we did a good job of making it speed up,”; BYU coach Jeff Judkins said. “;I thought tonight was more of our execution offensively.”;

BYU put up its highest point total and largest margin of victory this year.
