Police seek escapee from State Hospital

Police searched into the night yesterday for an escapee from the State Hospital in Kaneohe.

David True Seal escaped at 2:30 p.m. and was seen at about 4:15 p.m. near the entrance to the “;Stairway to Heaven”; hiking trail in Haiku Valley, which is inaccessible by car.

Police were using their helicopter and canine units to search the area last night.

Seal, 30, is 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs about 165 pounds and has brown hair and blue eyes.

Seal was arrested Halloween night in 2001 after he allegedly grabbed an 8-year-old girl who was on Front Street in Lahaina with her mother and grandmother near a park fronting the library.

Police said Seal was taking off the girl's clothes in a secluded area in the park when another man spotted them. Seal fled into Lahaina Harbor and was arrested, naked and hanging onto a buoy, outside the entrance to the harbor.

Seal was acquitted because of insanity, according to court records, and sent to the State Hospital.

Seal was last in court in June when his motion for conditional release was denied.

The public is asked to call 911 if they see Seal. Police encourage the public to use caution and advise against approaching him.
