Local-born Anne Misawa has received some national attention for the fine work she did on a well-received arthouse film.

A professor at the University of Hawaii's Academy for Creative Media, Misawa has been nominated in the Independent Spirit Awards category of Best Cinematography for her work on the Korean film “;Treeless Mountain.”;

The film by writer-director So Yong Kim was one of the better arthouse films this year, thanks in part to its atmospheric photography, focusing in on the lives of two little girls trying to find their way while their mother is away looking for her missing husband.

“;Treeless Mountain”; is now available on DVD.

The Independent Spirit Awards was founded in 1986, and with the growing stature of the awards themselves in the movie industry, has gotten more mainstream interest especially since the beginning of this decade.

The ISA ceremony will be aired on the Independent Film Channel live on March 5. Best picture nominees include “;Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire,”; “;The Last Station,”; “;(500) Days of Summer,”; “;Amreeka”; and “;Sin Nombre.”; (All but “;Station”; have either played, or are playing, in Honolulu.)

An interview with Misawa and more about the film will be in Sunday's edition.
