An auto theft suspect shot and wounded by police in Kapalama will stand trial for allegedly trying to kill three officers.

A grand jury returned an indictment yesterday charging Reinier M. Sales, 21, with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of attempted second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and auto theft. He remains in custody unable to post $250,000 bail.

Three plainclothes officers approached Sales as he sat behind the wheel of a stolen car Saturday, said Deputy Prosecutor Vickie Kapp. Sales drove the car toward one of the officers, then reversed toward the others, said Kapp.

Police caught Sales when he crashed into a light post.

Sales has a previous conviction in a similar incident in March, when he rammed a police vehicle in Makaha while driving a stolen sport utility vehicle.

He was sentenced to 40 days in jail.
