Mayor Mufi Hannemann said the city is still figuring out what to do with Wailupe Valley School, but in the meantime has hired private security and increased police patrols to prevent further vandalism at the East Oahu campus.

Crews painted over graffiti on the school's walls, doors and windows yesterday.

The city said there have been regular inspections and maintenance at the site since the Department of Education transferred the facility to the city on Sept. 17. The last inspection was in mid-November and there was no graffiti, officials said. It's believed the vandals struck over the Thanksgiving Day weekend.

The state shut down the 51-year-old school after the 2008-2009 school year. Former students were sent to nearby Aina Haina Elementary School.

The city owns the property and by law is required to evaluate proposals from city departments before offering it for any other use.

Options being considered include installation of a Board of Water Supply storage tank or using the buildings as offices for the Department of Parks and Recreation. Hannemann said a community meeting will be held soon to discuss options.
