Suspect indicted in police assault

The second of three men shot by Honolulu police last month while trying to drive away is facing trial in state court on assault and other charges.

An Oahu grand jury returned an indictment yesterday charging Gerald F. Galon Jr. with second-degree assault, first-degree assault of a law enforcement officer, and drug and drug paraphernalia possession. Galon, 29, is also charged with unauthorized possession of confidential personal information.

He remains in custody, unable to post $250,000 bail.

Police said officers found Galon sleeping in a car with the engine running near Cooke Street and Kapiolani Boulevard on Nov. 22. Galon gave the officers someone else's identification, said Vickie Kapp, deputy prosecutor.

When asked for the vehicle's paperwork, Galon drove off, dragging an officer whose arm got stuck in the vehicle, Kapp said. Another officer fired shots at the vehicle, wounding Galon.

Woman dies after being hit by SUV

A 68-year-old man, driving a silver Isuzu Rodeo sport utility vehicle, struck and fatally injured an 84-year-old woman in a Makiki store parking lot yesterday.

The incident occurred at 8:48 a.m. at Don Quijote, 801 Kaheka St.

The driver was mauka-bound on Kaheka Street and had started a right turn into the store's Ewa entrance when the SUV struck the woman, police said.

The woman was taken in critical condition, with serious head injuries, to the Queen's Medical Center, where she later died, police said.

The driver was not injured.

Suspect in Manoa burglary caught

Police arrested a 20-year-old Pearl City man yesterday after he allegedly burglarized the Manoa home of a 51-year-old man.

The 20-year-old allegedly entered the house without permission at 11:16 a.m. yesterday and was allegedly looking for items to steal when he was interrupted by police, police said.

The man fled, but police found him about 15 minutes later, identified and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree burglary.

Traffic stop leads to arrest of 3 men

A regular traffic stop resulted in the arrest of three men Monday, including an escapee.

A patrol officer stopped a 33-year-old Waianae man for a traffic violation in Waianae at 3:05 a.m. Monday.

The officer noticed the butt of a gun protruding from under the driver's seat, police said. The gun was later found to have been stolen in a 2004 burglary.

Police arrested the driver on suspicion of weapons and ammunition offenses, driving without a license and first-degree theft for allegedly detaining stolen property.

A 26-year-old passenger was arrested on suspicion of second-degree escape for failure to return from a work-furlough program.

A 35-year-old Waianae man was also arrested on suspicion of first-degree theft and a weapons offense.

Driver who fled accident arrested

Maui police arrested a 20-year-old Kihei woman who was driving a 2005 Honda Element sport utility vehicle yesterday when she allegedly hit a wooden utility pole, shearing it off its base, hit a tree, then left the scene of the accident without the vehicle.

Jessica Brown was found later at her home and charged with drunken driving and driving with a suspended license.

She received minor injuries and was treated by medics and firefighters, police said.

Brown had been driving southbound on South Kihei Road at about 3:18 a.m. yesterday when the Honda hit the utility pole, continued on and struck a kiawe tree.

When officers arrived the driver was gone, police said.

The Honda was found on the side of the road with extensive body damage, police said.

Due to the danger of the utility lines, South Kihei Road was closed for 8 1/2 hours while the pole was replaced and electric, telephone and cable service were restored.
