Maui police and firefighters plan to search again today for a Hana couple who were apparently washed away down a stream swollen by heavy rain Thanksgiving night.

Carl and Rae Lindquist, both 75, were reported missing about 11 a.m. yesterday after a Hana resident found their vehicle in a stream bed, a half-mile from Ulaino Road, said Sgt. Brian Abe of the Maui Police Department.

The couple, who live on Ulaino Road, were last seen eating at the Hotel Hana Maui about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Abe said. Police believe heavy rains swept the couple's sport utility vehicle into the stream, where it was found heavily damaged.

They are both real estate brokers, according to the Hana Coast Realty Web site.

Maui fire Capt. Jamie Joyo said the vehicle was reportedly found about 100 to 200 yards from shore. A fire helicopter searched a quarter-mile out to sea and along the shoreline two miles in each direction from the estuary because the area is hard to access by foot, Joyo said.

He said search crews found some personal items, but they couldn't be identified as belonging to the couple.

Police and firefighters also searched on foot.

Police said there is no sign of foul play.
