Firefighters suspended the search for a missing kayaker at 5 p.m. yesterday, until more is known about his whereabouts.
Russell Yoshida, 53, was reported missing Monday after he failed to return from a solo fishing trip.
Honolulu fire Capt. Terry Seelig said no signs of Yoshida have been seen since Tuesday, when items including his fishing rod were recovered near shore. Yoshida's paddle was recovered, but not his 10-foot kayak.
Seelig said firefighters began the third day of their search at 6 a.m. yesterday. They searched by helicopter and boat, as well as underwater with scuba divers, and by walking along the beach. The search stretched as far as three miles from land between Velzyland past Sunset Beach to Yokohama Bay around Kaena Point.
Firefighters were struggling with strong currents and 1- to 2-foot visibility in murky water from storm runoff.
