Homeless man is arrested in Kalihi bank robbery

Federal charges are pending against a 62-year-old homeless man who robbed a Kalihi bank yesterday.

The man allegedly entered the bank at 9:28 a.m. and handed the teller with a demand note.

The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the suspect, who fled on foot.

Officers later found and detained a possible suspect, who was identified at a field lineup, then arrested on suspicion of second-degree robbery, police said.

Attempted sex assault reported at War Memorial Baseball Fields in Wailuku

A woman reported to police she was attacked by an unknown man 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the War Memorial Baseball Fields in Wailuku.

Police said the man allegedly grabbed her, displayed a knife and threatened to rape her.

The woman, who was waiting for her son, who was attending an exercise class, had gone in to the restroom located between the tennis courts and the baseball fields when she was attacked.

The woman believes she broke one of his fingers on his right hand as she broke free, police said.

Police provided a description of the man as 5-feet 8-inches tall of unknown build, possibly homeless, “;really smelly,”; slightly unshaven, wearing a long-sleeved black shirt and jeans. He had a 2-inch tattoo of a cross on his left hand.

Search continues today for missing kayaker

The Fire Department will continue its search today for missing kayaker Russell Yoshida.

High surf on the North Shore made the search for the 53-year-old difficult.

Fire and Coast Guard personnel searched all day yesterday, but there were no new developments. The Coast Guard discontinued its search last night.

The Fire Department used its 25-foot rescue boat and helicopter, but could not use personal watercraft due to the high surf.

The experienced waterman, who was expected to return at 6 p.m. Monday, had gone out fishing for oio at 3 p.m. in waters off Waialua Beach near Kaiaka Bay. His car was found parked at Kaimanu Place.

Missing Alzheimer's patient is found safe

An Alzheimer's patient who was reported missing Monday was found Tuesday night and reunited with his family.

Tai King Loo was found at 9 p.m. at Queen Street and Ward Avenue, police said.

CrimeStoppers put out a report Tuesday that Loo was last seen at 11 a.m. Monday in front of Kamalu Elderly Housing at 94-941 Kauolu Place in Waipahu.

Witnesses to Big Isle sexual assault wanted

The Hawaii Police Department is still seeking witnesses to a sexual assault in Kailua-Kona in the early-morning hours of Nov. 1.

Following Halloween festivities in downtown Kailua, an adult female was waiting for a ride on the makai side of Kuakini Highway about 1 a.m. when four unknown men attacked her, causing multiple injuries to her face and neck, police said.

During the attack, at least one of the men sexually assaulted the victim, police said. This was south of the Coconut Grove complex and across from and near the entrance to the Kamaina Hale Apartments.

The suspects are described as stocky, between 5 feet 3 inches and 5 feet 6 inches tall, with dark complexions and short buzz-style hair. One of them was wearing a light-colored T-shirt with what looked like an Asian design or a character running from the side to the torso. At least one suspect was seen fleeing on foot south on Kuakini Highway.

A police investigation has determined that one or more people may have seen part of the encounter without realizing a crime was in progress. Detectives are continuing the investigation.
