Amateurs take Governor's Cup

The amateur team beat the professional squad, 13-11, to capture their third consecutive Governor's Cup Challenge yesterday at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

T.J. Kua, Jonathan Ota, Brandan Kop, David Saka, Lorens Chan, Matthew Ma and Bradley Shigezawa won their individual matches yesterday to lead the amateurs' victory.

It is the amateurs' 13th win in the 37-year history of the event.

 

Palmer, Haina get national notice

Two Hawaii high school seniors were named to the AVCA Under Armour Girls High School All-America Teams yesterday.

Outside hitter Sarah Palmer of Hawaii Baptist received a second-team berth. The two-time Star-Bulletin state player of the year has committed to play at Texas next season.

Outside hitter Mahina Haina of 'Iolani was named an honorable mention. Haina is headed to Cal State Northridge.

 

7 UH softball players honored

University of Hawaii softball players Alexandra Aguirre, Julie Franklin, Kelly Majm, Dara Pagaduan, Stephanie Ricketts, Clare Warwick and Traci Yoshikawa have received scholar-athlete honors for the 2009 season.

The honors were bestowed by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association.

 

Clinic features Heffernan

University of Hawaii director of strength and conditioning Tommy Heffernan will be among the featured speakers at a clinic for coaches and trainers at UH on Jan. 30.

Heffernan will speak on volleyball offseason training. Renowned strength trainer Chad Ikei is also a featured speaker.
