Surfers can be thankful

Expert surfers can look forward to a swell Thanksgiving. The National Weather Service forecasts wave heights in the high-surf warning level of 25 feet on north shores and 20 feet on western shores of all Hawaiian islands, thanks to a powerful storm passing far north of the state. The northwest swell is expected to peak today and gradually diminish through Friday. Big-wave riders no doubt are grateful for the holiday bounty.

Paraglider really has reason to be thankful

What started out as a thrilling outing turned into a harrowing ordeal for a Wyoming visitor who was lost for hours after disappearing while paragliding above Kahana Valley. The woman, in her 20s, was paragliding with friends when she vanished in a low-altitude cloud, and air currents carried her away. More than three hours after being reported missing, the paraglider was found on the Wahiawa side behind Hauula Valley. She was unhurt and “;grateful but shaken,”; rescuers said.

Check to see if your baby's crib is among those recalled

It is a parent's worst nightmare: the loss or severe injury of a baby in a place believed to be safe.

In the nation's largest recall involving cribs, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says 2.1 million drop-side cribs by Stork Craft Manufacturing Inc. are being recalled after four incidents in which infants were trapped and suffocated. The cribs were sold since 1993 at stores such as Wal-Mart and Sears and online at Babiesrus.com. Some were sold under the Fisher-Price brand.

The cribs' drop-side plastic hardware can break or deform or parts can go missing, the commission said. When the drop-side detaches, it creates a space between the drop-side and the crib mattress that can trap a child and lead to suffocation.
