Pros, amateurs all square

John Lynch and Joe Phengsavath won the last match of the day to pull a team of professionals into a tie with a team of amateurs on the first day of the Governor's Cup at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

The amateur team has won the cup each of the past two years. The second round begins this morning at 7:16.

» Former Hawaii golfer Jarrett Hamamoto advanced to the third stage of PGA Tour qualifying with his 19th-place finish at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif.

Hamamoto, who is from Chandler, Ariz., and lettered for Hawaii in 2004-06, finished the tournament 8 under par.

The final stage of PGA Tour Q-School will be held Dec. 2-7 at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla. The top 25 of 132 golfers will earn their PGA Tour cards, with the rest playing on the Nationwide Tour.

Hamamoto finished second for Hawaii in the 2006 WAC championships.

HPU women lose second game

Genesis Lewis scored 17 points, but the Hawaii Pacific women's basketball team lost its second game of the season, 90-68 to Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo.

The Sea Warriors fell to 0-2 but came home to take on rival Chaminade in Laie on Friday.

» Mike Helton of the Hawaii Pacific men's basketball team was named the MVP of the Ron Logsdon Basketball Classic yesterday.

Helton averaged 22.5 points in his two games in the tournament.

HPU comes home to host Western New Mexico on Sunday.

Fehoko selected to national game

Breiden Fehoko of Honolulu was selected to the Football University All-American Bowl in San Antonio yesterday.

The bowl game is for the top middle school players and will be held Jan. 4
