Hawaii gets 3 more picks

SAN JOSE, Calif. » UH safety Mana Silva added to his league-leading interception total with his third pick in as many weeks, and the third for the Warriors in last night's game.

Cornerback Lametrius Davis came up with interceptions along the sideline to thwart San Jose State's first two drives of the game, raising his season total to three.

“;The quarterback threw hitch because he thought I was in man, but I stayed in cover 2 and had the underneath and I just picked it,”; Davis said of his first interception of the night.

He credited safety Richard Torres for making a call that put him in position to make the second interception on SJSU's next possession.

Silva came up with a pick, his sixth of the season, in the second quarter and returned it 13 yards.

“;I got some YAC (yards after catch), I was hoping for a touchdown,”; Silva said. “;I'll keep working and hopefully I'll get one.”;

Running game gets rolling early

The Warriors kept the ball on the ground early on to help quarterback Shane Austin settle into his first start.

Running backs Leon Wright-Jackson and Alex Green combined for 98 yards in the first quarter. Wright-Jackson picked up 38 on his first two carries and finished with 65 yards and the game's decisive touchdown. Green ended with 81 yards on 14 carries.

Salas' start streak ends

Slotback Greg Salas' streak of starts ended at 24 games last night.

Salas' practice time last week was limited by a sprained foot suffered against New Mexico State. Joe Avery got his first start at wide receiver, with Kealoha Pilares at slotback.

Salas entered the game on UH's second possession and finished with eight receptions for 52 yards. He began the week as the nation's leading receiver and extended his streak of games with a reception to 25.

“;Salas really sucked it up with his foot and came out and he balled out, he played hard,”; fellow slot Jon Medeiros said.

SJSU's Margerum honored

Former UH assistant coach Ken Margerum was honored before the game for his upcoming induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Margerum, now the SJSU receivers coach and recruiting coordinator, coached at Hawaii in 1996. He was an All-America receiver at Stanford from 1977 to 1980.
