Japan to honor 2 Honolulu women
The government of Japan tomorrow will award its annual Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon, to Caroline Matano Yang, former executive director of Japan-United States Educational Commission and chairwoman of the Fulbright Scholarship Board. The award, to be presented at the consul general's residence in Honolulu, is for her promotion of educational exchanges between Japan and the United States.
At the same ceremony, Jean Masako Sakihara, a lecturer at the University of Hawaii Laboratory School, will receive the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Rays, for her instruction in kimono traditions. Sakihara started teaching Japanese and kimono culture at the UH Laboratory School in 1981 and has been a lecturer in that field for 28 years. She was also instrumental in establishing a credit course in kimono culture at UH.
