Farrington cools Honokaa
POSTED: Saturday, November 21, 2009
KAILUA-KONA » Honokaa brought the heat, but the Farrington Governors kept their cool just enough.
Harry Tuimaseve rushed for a career-high 258 yards and Alvin Faamausili hauled in two touchdown passes as Farrington pulled away for a 48-16 win over Honokaa last night in the opening round of the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I State Football Championships.
Farrington advanced to the semifinals and will meet nemesis Kahuku on Friday at Aloha Stadium. The win came at a cost to the Governors (9-2), who lost left tackle Joseph Siliga to an ejection in the second half. If the ruling is upheld, the 6-foot-1, 231-pound senior will be suspended for the Kahuku game.
“;My biggest concern is Joseph. (The officials) said he threw a punch. We'll look at the film and see if it's true,”; Farrington coach Randall Okimoto said. “;If it's true, it's a big loss.”;
The two feisty teams combined for 241 yards in penalties, mostly on 15-yard infractions. Honokaa drew 12 flags for 128 yards; Farrington had a dozen calls for 113 yards.
The Govs made up for that lost yardage with 402 rushing yards on 54 carries, including 29 attempts by Tuimaseve, who scored on touchdown runs of 5 and 12 yards. Their ability to control the line of scrimmage against the hustling Dragons opened up the passing game for quarterback Jared Hakuole, who was 8-for-12 for 111 yards, two touchdowns and no picks.
“;They really caught us off-guard,”; Honokaa coach Fred Lau said. “;Their quarterback had a career night.”;
“;I was surprised. We were calling the pass early and the corner bit on the run,”; said Faamausili, who had his hands full on defense covering Honokaa's speedy receiver, Eddie Morales. Faamausili finished with five grabs for 80 yards. Morales, who also played safety, had five catches for 107 yards.
Farrington struck on its first series, driving 44 yards and scoring on a 20-yard play-action pass from Hakuole to Faamausili.
Late in the quarter, Honokaa took a risk on third and 8 from its 5-yard line and tossed a backward pass—a lateral—from Johnson to Eddie Morales that went astray and was recovered by the Governors' Vaughn Tomas in the end zone for a touchdown. Farrington led 14-0 with 31 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Govs' defense continued to dominate, and the offense came up with a nine-play, 94-yard drive. Tuimaseve's 5-yard blast off right tackle gave them a 21-0 lead with 6:06 to go in the half.
Johnson's 38-yard field goal put Honokaa on the scoreboard with 3:26 left in the half. He then hurled a 45-yard bomb to Morales with 33 seconds left before intermission to bring the Dragons within 21-9.
Faamausili's second scoring catch, a 22-yard play-action pass on first down, gave Farrington a 28-9 lead with 8:47 left in the third quarter.
Honokaa went to a two-back, shotgun set for the rest of the game with some success. Maui Acantilado's spectacular diving catch in the end zone for a 28-yard touchdown brought Honokaa within 28-16 with 6:46 to go in the third.
After that, Farrington's defense stifled Johnson. The Govs put the game out of reach with a 12-yard touchdown run off the left side by Tuimaseve for a 36-16 lead with 4:36 to go.
Scotland Smith added a couple of insurance touchdown runs in the final 4 minutes.
