The 43-year-old man who died Wednesday in a high-speed crash on Pali Highway had seven speed-related tickets over the past four years.

Michael Allen Borges was cited four times this year with noncompliance with the speed limit. A person violates that law by driving over the speed limit or below the minimum limit.

Borges was cited for his first offense of excessive speeding in June 2008. Excessive speeding involves driving more than 30 miles over the speed limit or more than 80 mph. He was fined at least $637.

Borges had a court date on Feb. 11 for proof of compliance in that case.

Police cited Borges in 2006 with exhibiting speed or acceleration for allegedly screeching his tires to draw attention, and then in 2007 he was cited for noncompliance with the speed limit.

Borges died after he lost control of his 2008 Honda Civic and ran into a rock wall at Coelho Way and Pali Highway about 7 p.m. His newlywed wife, who was in the passenger seat, was taken to the Queen's Medical Center in serious condition.

At the same time, a sport utility vehicle crashed into the inside guardrail about 100 yards away under the Wyllie Street overpass.

Borges' wife told his sister that she remembered Borges being cut off, then losing control and slamming into the wall.

Police are investigating reports of a third car that might have caused the accident, but evidence does not support that possibility, said Sgt. Alan Vegas, of the Police Department's vehicular homicide section.

Vegas said it is clear the two vehicles were both speeding before the crash.

“;Mr. Borges was going very fast,”; he said.
