WAC volleyball seeds finalized

It took until the final night of the regular season to determine the last three seeds for the Western Athletic Conference volleyball tournament in Las Vegas.

Nevada, Fresno State and Boise State finished at 7-9 last night. The tiebreakers put the Wolf Pack at No. 4, the Bulldogs No. 5 and the Broncos No. 6.

Nevada and Fresno State meet in Monday's second first-round match, with the winner playing top-seeded Hawaii in Tuesday's second semifinal. Second-seeded New Mexico State awaits the winner of Monday's first match between third-seeded Idaho and Boise State.

Hawaii Bowl retains sponsor

Sheraton Hotels and Resorts Hawaii has signed an extension to remain as title sponsor of the Hawaii Bowl.

The college football game's executive director, David Matlin, announced yesterday that the extension runs through the 2010 game featuring teams from the Western Athletic Conference and Conference USA.

This year's game is slated for Dec. 24 at Aloha Stadium. The Hawaii Bowl is owned and operated by ESPN Regional Television.

UH men get another golfer

The Hawaii men's golf team signed another local recruit for the 2010-11 season yesterday.

David Saka of Waipahu joins the other eight local members of the team. Saka, a Moanalua senior, won the Turtle Bay Junior Classic in September.

The school signed Nainoa Calip, whose brother Pono is on the team, on Wednesday. Calip has won the BIIF title the past two years for Kamehameha-Hawaii.

The Warriors have placed an emphasis on bringing in local talent under coach Ronn Miyashiro.

Hawaii currently counts Pono Calip, Alex Chu, Daniel Koge, T.J. Kua, Cory Oride, Henry Park and Jared Sawada as its players with local ties.

HPU soccer coach steps down

Scott Liedtke resigned after three years as the head coach of the Hawaii Pacific men's soccer team.

Liedtke departs with a 30-16-4 record with 10 wins in each of the past two seasons. He said his increasing commitment to Le Jardin Academy, where he works in the admissions department, made the move necessary.
