Florida State offers Akuna

Florida State has offered Kapolei safety Shaydon Akuna a football scholarship.

The 6-foot-3, 215-pound senior also played quarterback for the Hurricanes and is believed to be the first local student-athlete offered a football scholarship by the Seminoles.

Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said Akuna has offers from many other schools: Arizona, Arkansas, Arizona State, Cal, Colorado, Hawaii, Oregon, Oregon State, UCLA, UNLV, Utah, Washington State and Wyoming.

Synthetic turf for Leilehua

For years, coaches and players at Leilehua have longed for a playable field.

Their wish has come true. Synthetic turf will be installed at Hugh Yoshida Stadium starting Nov. 30. Mules football coach Nolan Tokuda confirmed the news over the weekend, and girls soccer coach Mat Smithe is looking forward to the change — even at the cost of losing home field for a season.

“;It's kind of an inconvenience, but if you don't do it now, it won't ever get done. Last year, it rained so much, we ran in the hallways,”; Smithe said. “;It's supposed to be done by April. Graduation is going to be there.”;

The soccer teams at Leilehua will move practice to nearby middle and elementary schools. Smithe added that the track will also be torn out and replaced with asphalt until there is funding for a rubberized surface.
