Visitor disarms man in attack at hotel

Police arrested a 51-year-old man who tried to assault a Japanese visitor at a Waikiki hotel.

The 23-year-old visitor answered a knock at his door at the Maile Sky Court Hotel at about 5:40 p.m. Saturday, police said. A man forced his way into the room and tried to attack the visitor with a sharp tool.

The visitor disarmed the man and chased him down the stairwell. He detained the man until hotel security arrived, police said.

Man arrested in selling of car for scrap metal

A 60-year-old man who allegedly claimed a woman's car was his and sold it off as scrap metal in Waialua has been arrested, police said.

The woman, 24, reported her vehicle missing at about 3 p.m. Saturday. Police found a witness who reported seeing the car towed away.

Police found the driver of the tow truck who said the suspect sold him the car as salvage. The driver towed the car to a recycling company, where it was scrapped, police said.

Firefighters help hikers lost on Aiea Loop Trail

Firefighters rescued two hikers yesterday on the Aiea Loop Trail and were en route to help three others on Papali Trail in Hauula, said fire Capt. Robert Main.

At about 6:50 p.m. a man and a woman became lost about two miles along Aiea Loop Trail and called for help, Main said. A fire helicopter spotted them from above and directed a ground crew to their location. Firefighters hiked in and guided them out at about 9 p.m., Main said.

Meanwhile, three people called for help finding their way out the Papali Trail about 8 p.m., Main said. Firefighters planned to guide them out.
