Tomey decides to retire

SAN JOSE, Calif. » San Jose State football coach Dick Tomey will retire after the season.

The school said yesterday that Tomey would hold a formal news conference today to discuss his decision. The Spartans, 1-8 after Saturday's 24-9 loss to Utah State, have struggled, and their only win came against non-Football Bowl Subdivision school Cal Poly on Sept. 26.

They have their final two home games the next two weekends and conclude the season Dec. 5 against Louisiana Tech.

The 71-year-old Tomey is finishing his fifth season at San Jose State, 29th overall as a major college head coach and 46th in the business. He has an overall record of 182-143-7 at Hawaii, Arizona and San Jose State.

Tomey is president of the 10,000-plus member American Football Coaches Association.

Hilo reaches West Regional

Hawaii-Hilo will be going to San Bernardino, Calif., for an NCAA Division II West Regional volleyball first-round women's match on Thursday.

The Vulcans (25-1), winners of the Pacific West Conference championship, will play Northwest Athletic Conference champion Alaska Anchorage (22-7).

In September, the Vulcans beat the Seawolves 25-16, 25-11, 25-14.

Vulcans trounced in women's hoops

Nicci Miller scored 19 points and Hanna Johansson added 16 as Alaska Anchorage beat UH-Hilo 100-48 in the women's basketball opener for both teams in Alaska yesterday.

Hina Kimitete led the Vulcans with 13 points and Kirsti Imai added 11.

Leilehua to get new surface

Synthetic turf is coming to Hugh Yoshida Stadium very soon.

Leilehua football coach Nolan Tokuda said yesterday that installation of the long-awaited new surface will begin at the end of this month or in early December. Poor drainage and wet weather have often created a mess of the field over the years, leading to health issues involving bacteria.
