Former U.S. soccer star Lalas returns to coach clinic

Alexi Lalas coached children in the fourth annual Verizon Wireless Youth Soccer Clinic at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex yesterday. Lalas is a former player for the U.S. National Team and flew in yesterday morning to coach the clinic before flying out the same day.

The free national clinic is offered in 19 cities. Coaching the 370 kids, ages 4-17, were Lalas, “;Soccer”; Tom Mulroy and players from Chaminade.

Lalas, 39, competed in the 1994 World Cup and was the first modern-era American soccer player to play in the Italian Serie A. He currently works as an analyst with ESPN and ABC Sports.

UH's Forrester 113th at regional

Hawaii senior Jessica Forrester placed 113th at yesterday's NCAA West Regional cross country championship in Springfield, Ore.

Forrester, the lone Rainbow Wahine runner, was timed in 23 minutes, 7.57 seconds over the 6-kilometer course.

Washington's Kendra Schaaf finished in 20:41.70 in winning the individual title and leading the Huskies to the team championship.

Na Koa club meets tomorrow

Na Koa Football Club is holding its weekly luncheon tomorrow at The Willows restaurant.

Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin or one of his assistants will discuss last night's game against New Mexico State.

Honolulu Quarterback Club members will attend the luncheon, which starts at 11 a.m.

The cost is $15 and the public is invited.

Sea Warriors sweep 'Swords

Hawaii Pacific topped Chaminade in straight sets, 25-20, 25-17, 25-23, in the regular-season PacWest women's volleyball finale at St. Andrew's Priory gym last night.

Julia Gruszecka had 13 kills, and Kelly Balanay added eight kills and three blocks for the Sea Warriors, who improved to 14-11 overall and 11-5 in conference play.

Chaminade (5-21, 1-12), was led by Whitney Vivieros and Courtney Lorusso, who had nine kills each.
