Texas kids vote back book about Duke
Apparently, kids in Texas might be as enchanted by surfing legends as kids in Hawaii. Local author Ellie Crowe's “;Surfer of the Century, the Life of Duke Kahanamoku”; is one of the few books chosen for the Texas BlueBonnet Award Masterlist, a program that encourages children to read.
This is “;something really nice that has happened with my book,”; said Crowe. “;Texas has bought 10,000 copies for schoolchildren.”;
The Award Masterlist creates a reading list, chosen by Texas schoolchildren, that provides a wide range of reading experiences, promotes critical thinking and also comes up with a winner. Students who read at least five books on the list of 20 titles vote for their favorite, and the Texas Bluebonnet Award is given in February to the winner.
“;Isn't it great that the children of Texas want to read about Duke?”; said Crowe. “;It's interesting that it appeals to mainland kids, too. ... Maybe everybody wants to live in Hawaii and surf!”;
The 48-page illustrated biography is published by Lee & Low Books and priced at $18.95.
