Kauai victim was just out of prison
LIHUE » Authorities on Kauai say a man found dead in a pickup truck had been released from prison the day before.
They say 47-year-old Daniel Bonanno of Kapaa got out of the Halawa Correctional Facility on Oahu on Sunday after serving a five-year sentence for second-degree theft.
On Monday morning Bonanno was discovered dead in a truck on Kauai along Loop Road near the top of Kuamoo Road in Wailua Homesteads.
Following an autopsy Tuesday, police announced they had opened a homicide investigation.
Woman booked in stabbing of spouse
Police arrested a 27-year-old Maili woman yesterday after she allegedly stabbed her 29-year-old husband in the chest.
Police said that at about midnight yesterday, the woman stabbed the man in his left side of his chest at an apartment, 87-180 Farrington Highway, police said.
Paramedics took the man in critical condition to the hospital, but he later improved and was released.
The woman was booked on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder.
Teen arrested in elbowing of officer
Police arrested a 16-year-old boy yesterday who allegedly elbowed an officer in the face in Hawaii Kai.
The officer tried to detain the boy while investigating a report of a suspicious boy looking into vehicles at a shopping center at about 7:10 a.m., police said.
The boy elbowed the him twice in an attempt to flee, police said. Police booked the boy on suspicion of resisting arrest and assault on a police officer and turned him over to the Hawaii Youth Correctional Facility.
Suspect sought in failed sexual assault
Police are asking for the public's help to find an unknown man who attempted to sexually assault a woman in her Barbers Point home.
At about 10 a.m. Nov. 5, the man woke up a woman in her Guadalcanal Avenue home and locked her and her 11-month-old baby in the bedroom. He searched the home and returned to the bedroom with a knife, demanding a sexual favor. After the woman refused, the man fled in a vehicle, police said.
He is described as in his 30s, 5 feet 6 inches tall and 150 to 180 pounds with brown hair and eyes. He was wearing a brown long-sleeve shirt, black shoes and a navy blue hat with an embroidered badge on it.
Police ask anyone with information on the suspect to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300.
Large Maui scrap metal fire put out
Maui firefighters extinguished a scrap metal fire yesterday at SOS Metals Island Recycling in Puunene.
About 22 firefighters with three engines, two tankers and one tower responded to the Central Maui Baseyard on Mokulele Highway about 2:35 p.m.
It burned a 60-foot-tall and 100-foot-wide pile of metal and was extinguished at about 4:30 p.m., said Maui fire Capt. Brandy Lee.
The operator reported employees accidentally started the fire, Lee said. No damage was reported and no one was injured.
Accident closes portion of street
Police closed off University Avenue between Date and King streets last night to investigate a critical accident.
Bryan Cheplic of the Emergency Services Department said a man in his 30s was taken in critical condition to a hospital.
Police said the accident occurred about 7 p.m.
