Wie tied for 10th at Ochoa event

Honolulu's Michelle Wie shot a 2-under 70 yesterday in the opening round of the Lorena Ochoa Invitational in Guadalajara, Mexico, and trails leader Song-Hee Kim (65) by five shots.

Wie is playing for the first time since the Navistar LPGA Classic a month ago and has qualified for next week's inaugural LPGA Tour Championship in Houston. She enters today's second round tied for 10th.

The 20-year-old Punahou School graduate carded three birdies and a lone bogey at the par-3 17th. She hit 11 of 14 fairways and 17 greens in regulation, averaging 274.5 yards off the tee. She needed 33 putts.

 

HPU nabs PacWest honors

Hawaii Pacific sophomore Carianne Makino was named goalkeeper of the year and coach Michele Nagamine took home coach of the year honors for the 2009 PacWest women's soccer season, the league announced Wednesday night.

HPU's Meghan Fuller, a graduate of Pearl City High School, swept the newcomer and freshman of the year honors.

Freshmen Dyanne Anderson and Amber Fuller joined the other two as first-team All-PWC selections. BYU-Hawaii juniors Emily Mearns and Natasha Aiono also were selected to the first team.

 

Eberhard wins twice

Hawaii's Philipp Eberhard won two of three doubles matches he played in as the Rainbow Warriors tennis team completed the final day of the Hawaii Invitational against BYU.

UH went 2-4 in six doubles matches to close out the competition.

 

Sea Warriors sweep

Kelly Balanay jad 13 kills and Julia Gruszecka added 12 as Hawaii Pacific defeated BYU-Hawaii 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 last night in a PacWest volleyball match at the Cannon Activities Center.
