Arson suspected at old Navy club

Police opened an arson investigation after an abandoned building in Kalaeloa was hit by fire twice on Tuesday.

A fire was reported at the former Barbers Point Navy officer's club at 3:30 p.m. Firefighters put out the blaze, which damaged a small portion of the building, fire Capt. Terry Seelig said.

An investigator ruled it was intentionally set because the fire had multiple points of origin, Seelig said.

At 11:30 p.m., another fire caused extensive damage through the inside of the building, but the building remained standing, Seelig said.

Total damage to the old Barbers Point Building 73—which is abandoned—is estimated between $1,500 and $20,000, according to police.

Bystanders rescued a boy less than 5 years old from a swimming pool at an Aiea condominium complex yesterday.

Emergency Medical Services received the call at 12:42 p.m. yesterday from the Pearl One, 98-500 Koauka Loop.

Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said bystanders had pulled the youngster from the pool and began cardiopulmonary resuscitation until paramedics arrived.

Paramedics stabilized the boy before transporting him in critical condition to a hospital, Cheplic said.

Man arrested in fight with neighbor

Police arrested a 26-year-old Ala Moana man in the assault of a 53-year-old neighbor in front of an Atkinson Drive apartment at 1:15 a.m. Monday.

The man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and first-degree burglary.

Police said the older man tried to close his apartment door, but the suspect pushed his way into the apartment and continued the assault.

A neighbor said he heard a loud argument between the two men just before the alleged assault.

Paramedics took the victim to the hospital and he was admitted for treatment of his injuries, police said.

Responding patrol officers later found the suspect a block away. He was identified by a witness and arrested.
