Salas breaks 1,000-yard mark

Hawaii receiver Greg Salas passed the 1,000-yard mark for the season with 10 receptions for 187 yards and two touchdowns last night.

The junior slot receiver entered the game with 977 yards. He passed the milestone on his third reception of the night, a 33-yard catch and run in the second quarter, and had a long of 59 yards in the third quarter to set up a score.

“;The team comes first, but that was one of my goals,”; Salas said after breaking the century mark for the sixth time this season.

Interception streaks end

Hawaii cornerback Lametrius Davis' interception with 9 minutes left in the first quarter was Hawaii's first since the second quarter against UNLV on Sept. 19.

Davis outfought Utah State receiver Xavier Bowman on a deep pass down the middle. It was Utah State quarterback Diondre Borel's second interception of the season and first in 229 attempts, the last coming in the season opener against Utah.

Hawaii safety Mana Silva added another pick in the fourth quarter, his fourth of the season.

Tormey loses sister to cancer

The last few days have been a whirlwind for UH special teams coordinator Chris Tormey.

Tormey arrived back in Hawaii on Friday after the death of his sister, Jane Tormey, on the mainland from a lengthy battle with cancer.

“;She was a real inspiration to me,”; Tormey said after UH's win. “;She had amazing inner strength, and so many times I thought I had problems, I just looked to her for inspiration. I told the guys about her today, and I think she's with us here tonight.”;

It was his second trip to see her in the last two weeks. The first he took before the Nevada game.

“;It's been tough, whenever you lose someone that close to you that you care so much about,”; Tormey said.

Borel first to 1,000

Utah State quarterback Borel was held to only 18 yards rushing last night, his second-lowest total of the season.

However, it was enough to surpass 1,000 yards for his career to become the first quarterback in school history to reach that mark.

Overall, Borel is currently 21st on the school's all-time rushing list. Teammate Robert Turbin moved into 13th place with 1,434 yards, passing John Strycula.

Kaulukukui honored at half

Hawaii's first All-American, all-purpose back Tommy Kaulukukui, was honored at halftime.

Kaulukukui died in 2007, but was represented by his brother, Sol, who was also a Rainbows star, and his son, Tom Jr.

The family presented UH with a framed No. 32 jersey—the only retired number in UH football history, although it was inadvertently worn by running back Richard Higa briefly in the 1980s.
