Rainbow Wahine win 2 in softball

Melissa Gonzalez went 3-for-3 with two home runs to lead Hawaii to a 10-1 Kamaaina Classic softball victory over Chaminade in the first game of a doubleheader yesterday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

In the second game, Jenna Rodriguez and Gonzalez combined on a four-hitter to lead the Rainbow Wahine past the Silverswords 23-0.

Hawaii takes lead in Big Isle tourney

Hawaii won seven of 11 points yesterday in the second day of the USA Hawaii-Japan Junior Cup golf tournament at Waikoloa Beach Resort's Kings' Course.

Hawaii leads the competition 12-10 going into the final day today. Japan led 6-5 after the first day.

The event is conducted by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association and the Japan High School Golf Association.

Ho advances to quarterfinals

Hawaii surfer Coco Ho advanced to the quarterfinals in the Movistar Peru Classic yesterday at Lobitos, Peru.

Ho defeated fellow Hawaii surfer Alana Blanchard 14.50 to 10.50 in the third round of the ASP Women's World Tour event.

Two other Hawaii women, Melanie Bartels and Megan Abubo, lost in the third round and were eliminated.

Na Koa club meets tomorrow

Na Koa football club will hold a luncheon tomorrow at The Willows restaurant.

Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin or one of his assistants will discuss yesterday's game against Utah State.

Honolulu Quarterback Club members will also be attending.

The luncheon starts at 11 a.m., the cost is $15 and the public is invited.

BYUH stops HPU in women's soccer

Margaret Sekona, Natasha Aiono and Nicole Slater scored to lead Brigham Young-Hawaii to a 3-1 victory over Hawaii Pacific in women's soccer yesterday in Kaneohe.

Ashley Hunter had an assist for the Seasiders (15-3, 12-2 PacWest).

Kaua Wall scored for the Sea Warriors (10-8-1, 8-6).

» Kelly White scored two goals and Jolene Crook added one to lead Hawaii-Hilo past Chaminade, 3-0.

The Vulcans improved to 4-12-4 overall and 3-8-3 in the PacWest.

The Silverswords dropped to 0-17 and 0-14.

» Kimo Komomua scored in the second overtime to lead Hawaii Pacific over Brigham Young-Hawaii 2-1 in men's soccer in Kaneohe.

Komomua converted a cross by Sea Warriors teammate Chance Bukoski to break a 1-all deadlock.

The Sea Warriors improved to 12-2-2 overall and 9-2-2 in the PacWest.

The Seasiders fell to 8-8-1 and 7-5-1.

» Omar Garcia and Luis Segovia each scored two goals as Hawaii-Hilo booted Chaminade 6-2 in men's soccer in Hilo.

Garcia scored two unassisted first-half goals for the Vulcans (10-10, 9-5 PacWest). Segovia added two goals in the second half.

The Silverswords fell to 3-14 and 2-12.

Hawaii Pacific starts with No. 1 ranking

Hawaii Pacific is the top-ranked men's Division II tennis team in the West Region in the first Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll of the season released yesterday.

The Sea Warriors are also No. 5 in the national poll.

Seasiders 10th in West regional

The Brigham Young-Hawaii men's cross country team finished in 10th place at the NCAA Division II West Regional Championships in San Francisco yesterday.

The Seasiders' Spencer Deavila ran a 33:12 in the 10-kilometer race at Golden Gate Park to finish in 40th place in the individual standings.

Chico State won the team title with 42 points and Mark Cheseto of Alaska Anchorage won the individual title in 30:42.
