“;People most often think of drawing as using traditional media such as pencil and pen, and of drawings as representational. But there are many interpretations,”; says Toni Martin, director of Gallery Iolani at Windward Community College, where “;The Drawing Show”; is on exhibit through Nov. 20.

Martin spent several years curating the show, which showcases the work of 18 artists who respond to the discipline of drawing in a number of interesting ways.

For instance, former isle resident Gordon Sasaki, now an educator at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, created the abstract “;Touch”; using soy sauce. Don Dugal's “;Shoreboard Flightplans,”; a charcoal-and-graphite piece, also includes hand embossing, while Jonathan Busse's nude, “;Hanano's Hideaway,”; looks painterly thanks to its pastel pencil and ink wash.

“;Each artist takes their own interests in any (direction) they want,”; Martin says. “;There are a variety of exciting and enriching concepts.”;

The lineup includes mostly well-established artists, with a few emerging artists as well. They are Sasaki, Dugal, Busse, Ken Bushnell, Lynn Cook, Norm Graffam, Snowden Hodges, Pegge Hopper, Rebecca Horne, Linda Kane, Kloe Kang, Sanit Khewhok, Kit Kowalke, Ron Kowalke, Hal Lum, Guillem Molinas Bort, Stephen Niles and Yida Wang.
