Man shot at drive-through to appear in court

A 23-year-old man shot by police last week at a Waikele KFC drive-through is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow after his release from the hospital Friday.

Police arrested Jeremiah I. Lopez III after his discharge from the hospital.

Lopez had already been charged with two counts of assault on a law enforcement officer, auto theft, terroristic threatening, drug offenses and criminal property damage. His bail is set at $200,000.

Police said they stopped Lopez on Tuesday in a Dodge Durango that had been reported stolen.

Lopez allegedly tried to ram his way out of the drive-through, hitting a police vehicle and dragging one officer who was slammed into a metal post on the building. Another officer was hurt in the incident.

Officers shot Lopez three times, twice in the chest and once in the arm. The two injured officers were treated and released from the hospital.

Firefighters battled a 3-acre wildfire yesterday on Paheehee Ridge above Waianae Valley.

About 40 firefighters using six engines, a quint, tower, two tankers and a helicopter fought the blaze, said Honolulu Fire Department Capt. Earle Kealoha.

The helicopter made water drops as firefighters fought the blaze from both sides of the ridge because they were concerned about the fire coming back down the mountain or spreading to the other side, Kealoha said.
