Wahine win hoops exhibition

Keisha Kanekoa hit two free throws with 5.7 seconds left in overtime and made a key steal as the Hawaii women's basketball team held off Hawaii Pacific 73-70 before a turnstile crowd of 1,093 in an exhibition last night.

Dana Takahara-Dias won her collegiate coaching debut for UH despite late heroics from the Division II Sea Warriors in both regulation and OT. Kanekoa, Leilani Galdones, and Rebecca Dew each had 12 to lead the Wahine, while Breanna Arbuckle added 11.

Mana Hopkins had 26 points and 13 rebounds to lead HPU, including a corner 3-pointer to send the game into OT with 2 seconds left.

UH soccer trio named All-WAC

Hawaii junior midfielder Mari Punzal was named to the All-Western Athletic Conference first team last night at the women's soccer banquet in Boise, Idaho.

Senior forwards Britta Bourne and Ambree Ako were named to the second team.

Punzal, who scored two goals this season, was also a first-team selection as a sophomore. Ako earned her third All-WAC honor, finishing the season with seven goals and five assists. Bourne led the team with 10 goals and 23 points and had a hat trick in Hawaii's final game against Idaho.

The Rainbow Wahine didn't qualify for the WAC tournament.

Hou leads way for Hawaii golf

Hawaii senior Corie Hou shot a final-round, 2-over 74 to finish in 21st place at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational yesterday.

Hou was the top finisher for UH, which finished tied for 12th out of 18 teams. Freshman Brigitte Baker finished tied for 42nd with a season-best, three-round score of 231.

UC Davis won the team title, while Southern California's Lizette Salas was the top individual finisher.

» The Hawaii men's golf team finished eighth out of 12 teams in the same tournament.

Cory Oride finished in a tie for 13th place with an even-par 216, but wasn't the top golfer with local ties. That honor went to Hawaii Pacific's Charlie Renfro, who shot a final-round 69 to finish the tournament tied for 11th place at 1 under.

HPU finished ninth and BYU-Hawaii 11th in the team standings.

Hawaii-Hilo gets new logo

The Hawaii-Hilo athletic department will reveal to the public its new logo on Saturday at the school's gymnasium.

The ceremony will take place after the second set of the volleyball match between the Vulcans and Hawaii Pacific, which starts at 7 p.m.
