Kono's 67 ties for No. 2 at Turtle Bay tourney
Stephanie Kono, a UCLA sophomore from Punahou, shot a 67 yesterday to tie for the best round at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational women's golf tournament.
Kono was tied for second at 6-under 138 as the tournament entered its final round today.
UC Davis paced the team competition by six strokes, with first-place individual Demi Runas (68-69—137) leading the way.
Tulsa freshman Kristina Merkle (72-74—146) from Moanalua was tied for 15th.
Hawaii finished the first two rounds in 11th place. Brigitte Baker and Corie Hou both were at 6-over 150.
» In the men's tournament, San Diego State golfers entered today's final round in first, third and fifth places and the Aztecs were at 12-under and held a 12-stroke lead over second-place Santa Clara.
Second-round leader Andrew Cooley (70-68—138) was at six-under.
Hawaii's Cory Oride (70-75—145) was in an 11th-place tie. UH entered the final round in eighth place at 17 over.
» Travis Toyama and amateur partner Wade Nakamura won the Bridgestone Golf Pro-Scratch Championship at Pearl Country Club. They shot a final-round, best-ball format at 6-under 66 for a tournament total 16-under 128.
Toyama, a rookie professional, won last year as an amateur partner.
Anderson's hat trick fuels HPU women
Dyanne Anderson scored three goals and assisted on another as Hawaii Pacific beat host Chaminade 7-1 yesterday in a women's soccer match at Saint Louis School.
HPU improved to 9-7-1 and 7-5 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 0-15 and 0-11.
» In a men's match, visiting HPU beat Chaminade 5-0. Five players scored for the Sea Warriors, with Ikaika Fuerte posting three assists.
HPU is 10-2-2 and 7-2-2 in the PacWest. Chaminade is 3-11 and 2-9.
» Adam Maciejeweski scored in the final minute of his final home game to lead host Brigham Young-Hawaii past Hawaii-Hilo 1-0 on senior day.
» Sadie Simon tallied for the BYUH women as they beat visiting Hawaii-Hilo 1-0.
Grand Canyon picked to win league conference
Grand Canyon has been picked by league coaches as the favorite to win the PacWest Conference championship in women's basketball this season. Dixie State also received first-place votes. Hawaii Pacific, Brigham Young-Hawaii, Notre Dame de Namur, Academy of Art, Hawaii-Hilo, Dominican and Chaminade were picked to finish third through ninth in that order.
GCU guard Samantha Murphy is the preseason player of the year.
