Imu heating up for Thanksgiving

Kailua High School's athletic program is once again offering space in an imu pit to the public to raise funds for its program.

A fee of $15 will buy you enough space to cook 25 pounds of meat. Here's how to prep: thaw meat completely, season and wrap well in aluminum foil, then place in a large, disposable aluminum baking tray. Wrap the whole tray in foil.

The drop-off time is 3 to 4:30 p.m. Nov. 25; pickup is 8 to 9:30 a.m. Nov. 26. A maximum of 350 orders will be taken. The imu is at 451 Ulumanu Drive, on the school campus.

To place an order, send payment, with check payable to Kailua High School, to 451 Ulumanu Drive, Kailua 96734. Write “;Attention IMU”; on lower left hand corner of envelope. Include phone number. For multiple orders, indicate names of recipients. Enclose a self-addressed, stamped return envelope for confirmation ticket and number, which you will use to claim your food. Market City offers free turkeys

Need a turkey for Thanksgiving? Head out to Market City Shopping Center and cross your fingers—you just may receive one for free. In celebration of 61 years in business in Honolulu, the center is giving away 61 birds for the holiday season.

To put your name in the hopper, visit any participating center merchant and fill out an entry form by Nov. 16. Names will be drawn by random and winners can pick up their turkeys from Foodland Market City by Nov. 23. Call 734-0282.

Seafood and sausage flavor event

Kick back and relax on Sunday for “;Oyster Jam V”; at 3660 on the Rise in Kaimuki.

The food “;carnival”; will take place in the restaurant's lanai and banquet rooms, offering up oysters from the U.S., Canada and New Zealand; chicken, sausage and seafood gumbo; paillard of salmon, served with Nalo greens and citrus vinaigrette; prime rib hoagie with sauteed mushrooms and house-made potato chips; fish fry, coleslaw and tartar sauce; fried calamari, fire-roasted asparagus with Hollandaise; a dessert selection; and assorted beers and wines/champagne by the glass/bottle.

Get wild at 'shroom dinner

While wild mushrooms are still in season, Chef Keith Endo of Vino is presenting a communal table at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, featuring a menu with three wine pairings.

A Wild Mushroom Strudel will be served with a 2007 Tres Ojos “;Old Wine Garnacha”; from Spain, followed by Fresh Chanterelle Papadelle (2008 Domaine Durban Vaucluse from France), Braised Chicken with Wild Mushrooms (2003 Domaine Maestracci “;E Prove”; from Corsica). Reservations only; $45.

Also on tap at the Restaurant Row venue is a wine tasting “;Cab-a-Rama”; at 6 p.m. next Wednesday.

Hilo's Down to Earth opens

The Down to Earth store franchise expanded to Hilo on Oct. 24, and there will be a grand opening Saturday featuring local farmers, food sampling, live music and a 40 percent-off sale on more than a hundred products.

A cooking class for a vegetarian holiday feast starts at 3 p.m.

Located at the Waiakea Center, the new store carries natural and organic foods and groceries, including dairy products, local organic produce, bulk foods, vitamins and supplements, body-care products and household items, along with a vegetarian deli.
