UHH drops in volleyball poll

Despite winning two matches and clinching its second Pacific West Conference title in three seasons, the Hawaii-Hilo volleyball team dropped a spot to 17th in yesterday's AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25.

The Vulcans (24-1, 14-1) conclude the regular season Saturday when they host second-place Hawaii Pacific (12-10, 9-4).

The match will feature the conference's top four percentage hitters. Hawaii-Hilo's Fabiane Seben is tops with a .370 percentage. Vulcans teammates Kawena Cubi-Otineru (.303) and Morgan Bonney (.294) are Nos. 3 and 4. HPU's Kelly Balanay is second at .306.

UHH will move on to the NCAA Division II regional beginning Nov. 19.

Also this week, Brigham Young-Hawaii (13-12, 9-5) plays at Chaminade (4-20, 2-12) on Friday.

Bourne earns WAC honor

Hawaii's Britta Bourne was named the Western Athletic Conference soccer player of the week yesterday.

Bourne became the fifth player in school history to score three goals in a match in the Rainbow Wahine's 3-2 win at Idaho. She finished the season with 10 goals and three assists.

UH in third place at Turtle Bay

Hawaii is in third place after yesterday's first round of the Turtle Bay Invitational men's golf tournament at the Arnold Palmer Course at Turtle Bay Resort.

The Warriors are at even-par 288 and 10 shots behind team leader San Diego State. Long Beach State is in second place at 3 under. The Aztecs' Johan Carlsson is the individual leader after a 5-under 67.

Two Hawaii golfers — Cory Oride and Jared Sawada — shot 2-under 70s and are tied for third.

In the 12-team field, Hawaii Pacific is in a tie for seventh and BrighamYoung-Hawaii is in 11th.

» On the women's side on the Fazio Course at the Turtle Bay Invitational, Hawaii is in 10th place at 13-over 301.

The Rainbow Wahine's Ka'ili Britos is in a tie for 23rd at 2-over 74. UC Davis leads the team competition at 7-under 281, and Alice Kim of the Aggies is the individual leader at 5-under 67.
