QUESTION: What ever happened to plans to rename Lower Campus Road at the University of Hawaii at Manoa?

ANSWER: UH-Manoa Chancellor Virginia Hinshaw said last fall that she wanted to reduce the division between the upper campus, where most of the administration and classrooms are, and the lower campus, where the athletic administration and facilities are located.

One symbolic change would be to rename Lower Campus Road, which connects Dole Street to Kalele Road and Old Waialae Road.

Hinshaw said at the time that she preferred to refer to the different parts of the university separated by Dole Street as the makai and mauka campuses, rather than upper and lower campus. She had hoped to announce the name change by the spring.

However, Gregg Takayama, UH Manoa director of communications, said, “;There's been no final decision rendered on renaming Lower Campus Road.

“;It's one of those matters that's been put on pause, while we deal with other issues on campus,”; Takayama said, noting that the budget crisis has become more of a priority.

Hinshaw was hoping to come up with a Hawaiian name for the road and took suggestions from the public and from the university community, including Koa Anuenue, the athletic department boosters association.

There was talk of naming the road after a native Hawaiian warrior, or a donor, if there was an appropriate contribution to UH.

Takayama said Hinshaw is still taking suggestions on naming the road. One suggestion is to name the road after UH football great, Office of Hawaiian Affairs trustee and former coach and athletic director Tommy Kaulukukui Sr.

The road is not a city street, so UH has the ability to name it.
