Kamehameha rolls

Kamehameha flirted with giving Punahou a special treat on Halloween.

But behind the gritty running of tailback Ryan Ho, the second-ranked Warriors made sure it'll take two losses to the Buffanblu to end their hopes of an Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I title.

Ho ran for 147 yards and scored two touchdowns in the final 6 minutes as Kamehameha defeated No. 7 Saint Louis 21-7 last night at Aloha Stadium.

Kamehameha (9-1, 6-1) owns a one-game lead over Punahou, which it will play on Thursday in the regular-season finale for both teams.

Since the Warriors have a one-game lead and defeated the Buffanblu earlier this year, Kamehameha would have to lose twice to Punahou to miss out on the ILH championship and a berth in the state tournament.

“;This is big when it gives us so much cushion,”; Ho said. “;And it's the first time in 25 years we beat Saint Louis twice (in the same season) so, I mean, it's great.”;

Kamehameha's offense was nonexistent in the first half, and didn't come alive until it converted a fourth and 10 at the Saint Louis 25 to set up its first touchdown. Quarterback T.C. Campbell scrambled around and found Blaise Cuban for 24 yards to put the ball on the Saint Louis 1. Kupono Park scored on the very next play and the Warriors were off to the races.

“;They game-planned us good,”; Kamehameha coach David Stant said. “;They schemed us well, so we just tried to run it down their throats and we were a little bit more conditioned.”;

Ho had 86 rushing yards in the fourth quarter alone as the Warriors wore out the Saint Louis defensive line. An 8-yard touchdown run with 6 minutes left put the Warriors up 14-7. Then, after Taylor Tailulu intercepted a Jeremy Higgins pass, Ho scored from 28 yards out to put the game out of reach.

“;Our conditioning started to kick in, but I give props to Saint Louis,”; Ho said. “;It was just a great game.”;

The Crusaders finished their season 7-4 overall and 4-4 in ILH, marking just the second time in 26 years Saint Louis lost four games in a season.

Higgins, who committed to Utah State earlier this week, finished 14-for-38 for 262 yards with a touchdown and three interceptions in his final high school game.

Duke Bukoski had six catches for 99 yards, including a 32-yard touchdown from Higgins for the only score in the first half.

The Crusaders led 7-0 at halftime and held the Warriors to only three first downs. But Saint Louis failed to score in the second half and turned the ball over five times.

“;We changed some of our coverage on the backside, but stayed with most of our package,”; Stant said. “;We stopped killing ourselves with penalties and giving up the big plays.”;
