Forrester 24th at WAC meet

Hawaii's Jessica Forrester finished in 24th place at the Western Athletic Conference women's cross country championships at Reno, Nev., yesterday.

The senior finished in 20 minutes, 33 seconds over the 5K course at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park. Among the other Hawaii finishers were Liisa Cushing (20:47), Ashley Aitken (20:58) and Mariana Monasi (21:09).

The Rainbow Wahine finished seventh in the nine-team competition. New Mexico State captured the team title.

Na Koa Club meets tomorrow

Na Koa Football Club will host its weekly luncheon at The Willows restaurant tomorrow at 11 a.m.

Hawaii football coach Greg McMackin or one of his assistant coaches will discuss yesterday's 31-21 loss to Nevada.

Honolulu Quarterback Club members will also be attending, and the public is invited.

UH-Hilo claims PacWest title

The University of Hawaii-Hilo women's volleyball team locked up the PacWest championship and an NCAA berth by defeating Brigham Young-Hawaii 25-22, 22-25, 29-27, 25-20 last night in Laie.

Four Vulcans tallied double-digit kills, led by Morgan Bonney and Fabiane Seben with 14 apiece. Katie Swenson had a match-high 53 assists for UH-Hilo (23-1, 13-1).

BYUH (13-12, 9-5) struggled offensively, hitting .081.

The Vulcans avenged their 2007 undefeated season, when they were denied a postseason bid into the Division II National Championship Tournament.

BYUH defends PacWest cross country title

The Brigham Young-Hawaii women's cross country team defended its team title yesterday at the Hawaiian Airlines PacWest championships in San Francisco.

Hawaii Pacific's Quinn Horochuk captured first place, completing the 5K course at Golden Gate Park in 18 minutes, 53 seconds. Close on her heels were BYUH's Lacey Krout (19:01), Lacee Kurtz (19:12) and Katherine Buxton (19:24), whose 2-3-4 finish helped the Seasiders to the championship.

BYUH totaled 22 points, with Hawaii Pacific taking second place with 42 points. Hawaii Hilo (99) finished third, and Chaminade placed seventh (154).

Nine of the top 10 individual harriers were from Hawaii's PacWest member schools.

» Brendan McMaster's third-place finish led the BYUH men to a second-place finish in the PacWest men's cross country championships.

McMaster ran the 8K course in 26:09. Academy of Art's Amos Maru took first place individually in 25:17.

Other Hawaii PacWest runners finishing in the top 10 were BYUH's Spencer Deavila (seventh, 26:10), Hawaii Pacific's Dany Malley (26:32), Hawaii-Hilo's Stefano Barbis (26:34) and BYUH's Luke Graessner (26:41).

Academy of Art won the men's team title, followed in order by BYUH, Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii-Hilo. Chaminade finished seventh.
