Accused murderer is charged in separate case

Prosecutors charged a 30-year-old man, incarcerated for the murder of 18-year-old Iris Kaikana-Rodrigues, for breaking a man's jaw in January. 

Corbit K. Ahn, who is being held at Oahu Community Correctional Center, was charged Wednesday with second-degree assault.

Ahn allegedly punched a 21-year-old man at 3 p.m. Jan. 3 in Mililani, and broke his jaw.

Ahn was arrested and charged Wednesday. 

His bail was set at $11,000.

1 teen dead, 2 hurt after fall in Waimea

A 17-year-old boy died after falling 90 feet to the base of a dry waterfall in a ravine in Waimea, Big Island fire officials said.

Fire rescue personnel found him dead at the bottom of the waterfall, while a 16-year-old boy suffered serious injuries after falling about 40 feet.

A 19-year-old, who had been hiking with the boys, was not injured, but needed help from a cliff ledge about 40 feet above the bottom of the waterfall, which was about 120 feet high.

The Fire Department received the call at 10:02 a.m. yesterday and arrived on scene near the 4-mile marker on the makai side of Kohala Mountain Road at 10:52 a.m.

Rescue personnel brought out all the victims by helicopter.

The 16-year-old boy was taken by ambulance to North Hawaii Community Hospital in serious condition.

Man sought in theft and use of credit card

Police are asking for help in identifying a man who is suspected of fraudulently using a credit card stolen from a car parked three weeks ago near the beach in Lanikai.

Police said a woman parked her car in front of 953 Mokulua Drive at about 2:45 p.m. Oct. 7 and went to the beach.

When she returned to her car, she discovered that her car had been broken into and her purse was taken from the trunk, including her credit card.

The credit card was used at Safeway Kaneohe at 3:59 p.m. Oct. 7 by an unknown man.

Hiker sleeps through night while lost on Mauna Loa

A 43-year-old Norwegian woman survived sleeping Wednesday night in the cold atop Mauna Loa after getting lost on a hike with her husband.

The woman was an experienced hiker who has traveled the world. She survived by sleeping in a crevice, where she found protection from the elements, fire Battalion Chief Aaron Arbles said.

The couple had started out at 1 p.m. Wednesday but got separated, fire officials said. The husband sat down to rest, while the wife continued to the summit. When she did not return, he initially got lost looking for her and went back to the observatory at 9 p.m.

Pohakuloa Training Area and fire personnel searched the area yesterday morning.

A fire helicopter was sent out at 7:25 a.m. yesterday and began an aerial search for the woman, who called for help on her cell phone. But the woman was unable to convey her location since she was unfamiliar with the area. A second helicopter flown by a private contractor, dispatched by the National Park Service, assisted in the search.

Arbles said there were some communication issues, including problems with the cell phone.
